Federal military academies are among the institutions affected by the government shutdown. More than 1,000 civilian employees have been furloughed at the U.S. Air Force Academy, forcing it to cancel 20 percent of its classes.

The U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis), the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), needed approval from the Pentagon in order to play their scheduled football games.

At the Naval Academy, more than 600 staff members have been furloughed, including just about everyone who works in the public affairs office. Here & Now talks to the one person in media affairs who gets to stay on the job.
