Eric Garcetti took office as mayor of Los Angeles last July. In his second Here & Now interview since he became the city’s top leader, Garcetti says the toughest thing he’s had to do so far was getting city unions to agree to a new contract that for the first time in 20 years included no raises for three years, along with controlling costs and pensions.
Garcetti tells host Jeremy Hobson that those kinds of moments “come quick, everybody’s watching, if you don’t do them right, they’ll kind of walk all over you for the rest of your term, but we were able to do it in a tough but responsible and fair way.”
Mayor Garcetti also discusses the historic drought, the state of the film industry in L.A. and immigration reform.
