Loyola hosts jazz, art summer camps

Loyola University will host two summer camps devoted to the arts this July. The 18th annual Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp will run its three-week term from July 2 – 20, and the art history-based KidsArt camp will run from July 9 – 20.

This is the third year Loyola will host the Armstrong jazz camp, which will feature Grammy Award-winning Jazz tenor saxophonist David Murray as the 2012 artist-in-residence. Murray began playing music in church with his parents and two brothers, and was introduced to jazz while a student in the Berkeley school system. He is credited with creating a unique style that combines funk and gospel with his traditional jazz roots.

The Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong Summer Jazz Camp offers intense music education classes to young student musicians between the ages of 10 and 21 years old. Students must be actively involved in a music education program in school or through private instruction and have been studying music for a minimum of two years to qualify. The program focuses mainly on honing musical skills, but also implements a series of character-building exercises.

“We are thrilled to have this successful partnership with the university,” said Jackie Harris, camp executive director. “Being at Loyola, students not only have the opportunity to study in a state-of-the-art facility, but the kids also get to experience college life, which makes college enrollment a more realistic and attainable goal.”

Sponsored by Loyola’s Department of Visual Arts, KidsArt is an art program for children ages seven to 14. The curriculum is based on art history and provides authentic, hands-on experiences in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics and sculpture. The courses are taught by experienced, certified teachers and studio artists, and the program will conclude with a student art exhibition open to family and friends.
