Jefferson Parish schools swore in its new superintendent Monday night - former DeSoto Parish schools superintendent Cade Brumley.
Brumley is now the superintendent of the largest school district in the state. The school board ousted his predecessor Isaac Joseph over concerns about falling test scores, and Brumley’s hiring in March was contentious.
Brumley says he’s spent the last 100 days visiting the district’s schools, and now he has a plan.
"I know what we should start doing, what we should stop doing, and I know what is possible," Brumley said.
Brumley’s plan includes implementing a district-wide curriculum, improving professional development for teachers, pay raises and creating a more comprehensive support system for students learning English.
Jefferson Parish has 50,000 students. Eighty percent of them are from low-income families, and a growing percentage are learning English in school.
