Federal Court in New Orleans to Hear LSU-VA Hospital Lawsuit
By Eileen Fleming
New Orleans, La. – A federal judge in Washington, D.C., is sending the lawsuit filed against the proposed medical complex to New Orleans because of strong local interest in the case. The National Trust for Historic Preservation in May sued the U-S Department of Veterans Affairs and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It claims the agencies violated the National Environmental Policy Act by approving the hospital complex proposed in the Mid-City Historic District. The National Trust says the project would require demolition of more than 250 homes and other properties with historic designations. LSU and the VA say the new complex would revitalize downtown with high-paying jobs and state-of-the art medical care. The D.C. judge did not rule on the city and state requests to intervene in the matter. No hearing date has been set.
