Closing Arguments Begin In Ray Nagin Trial

Former New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin.

Closing arguments began Monday morning in the federal corruption trial of former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. Nagin spent two days testifying against the 21-count indictment.

The government alleges Nagin took free luxury vacations and bribes in exchange for city contracts. Nagin testified that he had no idea a private contractor paid for his family vacations.

He said contractors did invest in his family’s granite company, but maintains the company was owned by his sons.

Prosecutors presented documents, emails and checks they say show a mayor strong-arming businessmen into engaging in corruption. Some of those men testified against Nagin. They have already pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing. Nagin’s attorney Robert Jenkins says they’re lying to get lighter sentences.

Jury deliberations will begin after the judge instructs them on the law.
