The New Orleans Mission has passed the half-way mark in a fund drive to revamp its Central City home. The plan will ultimately have men needing accommodation lining up in the back of the building — not on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.
Mission executive director David Bottner says plans are in place that will first repair, and then restore the historic Mission building.
“We’re about $3.5 million into that project, so we’re a little bit over halfway there," he said. "And that will start with the roof and the façade because we want it, again, aesthetically nice for the community and we want a safe environment for the men with a nice new roof so that we don’t have any more leaks, any more holes.”
Bottner says the façade will be revamped to reflect the 1920s furniture store it once was. He says there will be windows and clear glass for a transparent style. He says the repairs are scheduled to begin this fall.
