The new leader — at least for a while — of the New Orleans Police Department is pledging to continue reforms.
Lt. Michael Harrison is now the interim superintendent, replacing Ronal Serpas, who is retiring to teach at Loyola University.
Harrison told reporters at the new conference announcing his appointment that he’s optimistic the department will continue getting better.
“As we continue to rebuild, the police department is poised to conduct sound, constitutional police work with cutting edge technology while remaining relentless and tough towards the reduction of murder and violent crime," he said. "Through the leadership of our mayor, and with the investment of the city council, the new New Orleans Police Department has better facilities, better equipment, increased training. And we’re hiring.”
Harrison attended a community meeting last night with Mayor Mitch Landrieu in the West Bank to hear where residents want to spend tax money.
Some asked for faster response times from police on emergency calls.
