NOPD Planning Changes, Community Outreach Meetings On Consent Decree

New Orleans police are cutting back on night hours at district stations. Officials are also setting up community outreach meetings for feedback on department operations.

Starting today, all district police stations – except the one in the French Quarter – will be closed to the public between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. Desk officers who had been working on administrative duties will now be back on the streets.

Police Superintendent Michael Harrison said the night watch officers have answered about one call every couple of days – and their time is better spent on patrols. Harrison is trying to reduce response times while fighting violent crime.

Meantime, the department has scheduled meetings throughout the city to update the community on progress being made on court-ordered improvements. They start Wednesday and will run through June 30.
