More than 100 Louisiana pharmacies will start receiving the state’s first batches of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Monday.
The newly released doses are for those who fit into Tier 1B of Phase 1 of vaccine distribution. That includes home healthcare workers and their patients, ambulatory and outpatient care personnel, patients on dialysis and allied health students, residents and staff. The largest group in Louisiana’s 1B rollout are people age 70 or older, about 485,000 people. There are 640,000 Louisianans who fit into the 1B classification.
On the final day of 2020, Gov. John Bel Edwards announced that the state would receive approximately 10,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine this week. Those doses are being distributed to pharmacies that were selected at random from all of those that enrolled with the Louisiana Department of Health and CDC. Doses were apportioned according to each parish’s population.
An employee at Comeaux Pharmacy in Kenner, who asked to withhold her name because she’s not authorized to discuss the vaccines, said the pharmacy is still waiting for the doses to arrive. She added that the facility has a list of patients over age 70 seeking appointments to receive the vaccine. At noon on Monday, the list had exceeded 600 people.
To reduce spoilage, the Department of Health is requiring patients to make appointments. The Moderna vaccine requires a storage temperature of -20 degrees Celsius, but can remain viable for 30 days kept at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, the temperature of a standard refrigerator.
The LDH posted a complete list of vaccination sites on Monday. The list is likely to grow in the coming weeks as the vaccine becomes more widely available.
