At NCAA Final Four, New Orleans’ Caleb Daniels gave Louisianans something to root for

During this year’s NCAA March Madness basketball tournament, Louisiana State University didn’t so much as make it past the first round. And teams like Tulane and Xavier didn’t even make it to the bracket. Yet, when fans from across the country gathered at the New Orleans Superdome for last weekend's Final Four, Louisianans still found themselves with something to root for: New Orleans native Caleb Daniels.

But while Daniels holds a starting spot as a shooting guard for the Villanova Wildcats today, just months ago, he wasn’t even permitted to practice more than free throws. Louisiana Considered Managing Producer Alana Schreiber tells us how Daniels overcame a serious heart condition to make it to the big dance — and how the city of New Orleans rallied behind their native son.

Alana Schreiber is the managing producer for the live daily news program, Louisiana Considered. She comes to WWNO from KUNC in Northern Colorado, where she worked as a radio producer for the daily news magazine, Colorado Edition. She has previously interned for Minnesota Public Radio in St. Paul.
