  • The Jefferson Parish East Bank Regional Library presents four local poets – Gina Ferrara, Jonathan Kline, Ralph Adamo and Karen Maceira – who will discuss poetry and their latest works at 6 p.m., Monday, April 12, via video conference online hosted by Chris Smith.   • Kelly Harris DeBerry will be the guest at virtual happy hour Friday, April 16, at 5 p.m. sponsored by Garden District Book Shop.
  • The New Orleans Writers Workshop has three upcoming classes. Alison Alsup teaches “Writing the Very, Very Short Story,” beginning April 19; Jessica Kinnison teaches “The Mystery of Suffering: How to Write What Hurts,” starting April 28; and Brad Richard teaches “How to Write a Poem,” beginning May 1.   • And finally, we mourn the passage of Lee Grue, who died Saturday, April 3, at her home in New Orleans. Lee was the author of the poetry collections “French Quarter Poems,” “Downtown,” and “Trains and Other Intrusions: A Chapbook of Poetry” She also wrote “Blood at the Root: A Novel” and “Goodbye Silver, Silver Cloud,” a collection of short stories, and co-edited “Mending for Memory: Sewing in Louisiana — Essays, Stories, and Poems,” with Susan Tucker.Lee hosted the New Orleans Poetry Forum from 1976 to 1990, invited poets to the Backyard Poetry Theater at her house, which became the Front Room Performance Space. She also edited The New Laurel Review. The New Orleans Poetry Festival will hold a tribute reading to Lee April 18, at 5 p.m. with poets Gina Ferrara, Peter Cooley, Julie Kane and Valentine Pierce. The Reading Life in 2010, Susan Larson was the book editor for The New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1988-2009. She has served on the boards of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and the New Orleans Public Library. She is the founder of the New Orleans chapter of the Women's National Book Association, which presents the annual Diana Pinckley Prizes for Crime Fiction.. In 2007, she received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the literary community. She is also the author of The Booklover's Guide to New Orleans. If you run into her in a local bookstore or library, she'll be happy to suggest something you should read. She thinks New Orleans is the best literary town in the world, and she reads about a book a day.
