Michelle Dumont will read from and sign “Phoebe Cakes the Bulldog: A Mardi Gras Tail,” Saturday, February 12, at 11 a.m. at Garden District Book Shop.

Four book clubs sponsored by Jefferson Parish Libraries are beginning Tuesday, February 15. All are free of charge and open to the public, and one of them might suit your reading tastes. Here they are:

The BestBank Book Club meets from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Gretna Library, 102 Willow Drive, Gretna. The book to be discussed is The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell.

The Old Metairie Book Club meets from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Old Metairie Library, 2350 Metairie Road. The book up for discussion is The Dry by Jane Harper.

The Jefferson Highway Book Club meets from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the River Ridge Library. The book to be discussed is An American Marriage by Tayari Jones.

The Great Books Discussion Group meets at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie. The book up for discussion is “A Gathering of Old Men,” by legendary Louisiana author Ernest Gaines.

The Reading Life in 2010, Susan Larson was the book editor for The New Orleans Times-Picayune from 1988-2009. She has served on the boards of the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival and the New Orleans Public Library. She is the founder of the New Orleans chapter of the Women's National Book Association, which presents the annual Diana Pinckley Prizes for Crime Fiction.. In 2007, she received the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the literary community. She is also the author of The Booklover's Guide to New Orleans. If you run into her in a local bookstore or library, she'll be happy to suggest something you should read. She thinks New Orleans is the best literary town in the world, and she reads about a book a day.
