Prison Reform Groups Call For An Independent COVID-19 Monitor, Warn Of Pandemic Stress ‘Tinderbox’

Prison reform groups are calling for the creation of an independent health monitor to combat the spread of the coronavirus among incarcerated people and prison staff.

They say efforts by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections to tackle the pandemic have fallen far short and demanded the new position at a hearing this week at the legislature.

To learn more, reporter Rosemary Westwood spoke with Bruce Reilly, the deputy director of Voice of the Experienced, or VOTE, which advocates for prisoners.
