Saints Beat Bears In Sloppy Contest, 31-15

The 2014 New Orleans Saints season can be boiled down to one word: inconsistency.

A week and a day after getting steamrolled at home to the Panthers, the Saints flew off to Chicago and beat down the Bears. In the cold, outside, in the rain. On the road.

But those old narratives don’t really mean much anymore.

Following back-to-back turnovers to start the game, a Brees fumble, two botched field goal attempts and some other assorted messes from both teams, the Saints took over in the second and third quarters and closed the Bears down.

Drew Brees now has over 4,000 passing yards on the season, extending his NFL record to nine straight 4,000-yard seasons.

The Saints will host the Atlanta Falcons this coming Sunday. The Saints (6-8) are still trying to pull away from the pack at the top/bottom in the ultra-uncompetitive NFC South.

“I think everyone understands the significance of that game,” said head coach Sean Payton.

GAME NOTES

Drew Brees completed 26 of 36 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns. He notched a 137.8 quarterback rating.

Kicker Shayne Graham missed a third field goal for third time this season, but it appeared to be because of a bad hold by backup quarterback Luke McCown in the rainy, slippery conditions at Soldier Field.

A 39-yard reception by Pierre Thomas in the first quarter was the second longest of his career.

The Saints picked off Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler three times, and sacked him seven times.

Paid attendance at Soldier Field: 60,996.
