Mayor Cantrell Says Saints Games With No Fans Are 'The Best Way To Go'

Mayor LaToya Cantrell at a press conferece at City Hall on Tuesday afternoon. New Orleans, Louisiana. April 14, 2020.

In an interview on CNN Thursday night, Wolf Blitzer asked Mayor LaToya Cantrell the question on many American and Louisianian minds: "NFL football? What about that?"

"I know that the NFL is working very hard to determine methods of re-engagement, like no fans present. I think that is the best way to go," she said.

"But I know they're working very hard as it relates to not only the players but the staff that is required to even host a sporting event."

It's the second time this week the mayor has taken a stance on big events in New Orleans in 2020. On Tuesday, she said during a press conference that the city' festivals should cancel for the year

The next day, Essence Festival of Culture canceled. The day after that, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival canceled.

Things work very differently for the NFL, of course, but it fits into the same problematic economic picture for New Orleans.

"Let me tell you, 30 percent of our workforce in the city is tied to our hospitality and tourism industry," Cantrell told Blitzer. "The city of New Orleans is the backbone of the industry, and it's a city that has been hit very hard as it relates to the population of people."
