Cokie Roberts To Give Keynote Address At Tricentennial Symposium

This evening (Thursday) kicks off the tricentennial symposium ‘Making New Orleans Home.’ Organized by The Historic New Orleans Collection and the City, the event highlights 300 years of New Orleans history. Cokie Roberts is the keynote speaker. Roberts is a political commentator and a native New Orleanian - who now lives in the DC area. She says the tricentennial’s a big deal, and even though people up north might not care about the tricentennial, "they care about New Orleans. People have heard of this city and have a sense of it as a special place."

Roberts knew she wanted to be a part of the city’s tricentennial celebration. When she heard this symposium was called ‘Making New Orleans Home,’ delivering the keynote just felt right. "Because really, all of the wonderful stories of home were just kind of rattling in my head for a few weeks," Roberts said.

She’s got a deep knowledge of the city, and her family runs deep here, too. She’s the daughter of state politicians Lindy and Hale Boggs, and is a Morrisson, and a Claiborne. "Combining those stories with the important history of the city is a fun thing to do."

Roberts’ talk kicks off the four-day event, which includes panels, lectures, and cultural programming.

“Making New Orleans Home: A Tricentennial Symposium,”starts this evening and runs through Sunday, March 11th. More information at WWNO.org. HNOC is a WWNO funder.
