NOLA Public Schools Will Resume Virtual Classes Wednesday

NOLA Public Schools will resume virtual instruction and reopen buildings Wednesday after closing in anticipation of Tropical Storm Marco.

New Orleans Public Schools will reopen Wednesday after closing briefly due to Tropical Storm Marco. At one time forecast to be a Category 1 hurricane, Marco ultimately weakened to a tropical depression as it approached southern Louisiana on Monday.

While the school is still operating at 100 percent virtual learning, buildings will be open to school staff and teachers. Individual schools will coordinate with their students to make up missed services such as school meal pickup.

The district said they will continue to monitor the potential impacts of Hurricane Laura on the New Orleans area and will reassess school operations as needed.

Hurricane Laura is expected to strengthen rapidly over the next 36 hours and could make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane at the western coast of Louisiana and the upper Texas coast.

NOLA-PS is expected to announce later this week whether students will resume in-person classes in September. At a press conference last week, Superintendent Henderson Lewis said the recent health data had been very promising, but that they needed to make sure the trend was sustained before making a decision.
