The War of 1812: Which One Was That??

From: Backstory with the American History Guys. marking June 18th, the bicentennial of the War of 1812.Some called it the "Second War of Independence," but what many of us remember about the war is Dolly Madison saving the portrait of George Washington and Francis Scott Key writing the Star Spangled Banner. For those of us of a certain age, the thing we probably remember best is Johnny Horton's song, "The Battle of New Orleans." Feel free to sing along:

"In 1814 we took a little trip
Along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip.
We took a little bacon and we took a little beans
And we met the bloody British in the town of New Orleans."

Popular culture aside, the War of 1812 was far more significant for the future of our country than most people suspect.
