New Orleans, LA – In the farmers market world, we love seniors. While a minute's not long enough to count the ways, maybe the most important is this: Seniors still cook. I mean, really cook with pots and pans. They come to market and know what to do with mustard greens and corn meal. For those seniors who are struggling on a fixed income and below the USDA poverty line, there's a brilliant program to help - The Farmers Market Nutrition Program. Each household gets $24 worth of vouchers to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers markets. Since space is limited, seniors are encouraged to sign up at Catholic Charities, 1000 Howard Avenue on specified days at the end of March. For more details about sign up times and location, log onto wwno dot org. For the Farmers Market Minute, this is Richard McCarthy.
The Archdiocese Food for Families/Food for Seniors is managing the sign-up process for the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry. To sign up, seniors who quality for the program are invited to visit Catholic Charities, 1000 Howard Avenue in downtown New Orleans:
