New Orleans, LA – The paper keyboard charts in Carol Dolliole's music class are now stuck in a corner, hidden behind an instruction board. Students are now using the real deal.
They have $30,000 worth of new electronic keyboards. She says they'll not only learn piano, but some may come to understand Treme's rich musical heritage.
"I think many of them do. I don't that all of them really realize it. But some of them definitely do because they live right here in the area and some of them know our local musicians, which are, you know, very, very talented and world renown."
One is pianist Davell Crawford, a New Orleans native who now lives in New York. He showed students what they could learn.
"They're the next generation of musicians, the next generation of doctors and lawyers. And music helps with all of that."
The school was one of eight selected from across the country by the VH1 Save the Music Foundation and the Energizer corporation.
