About 200 people gathered at the same New Orleans intersection that erupted in gunfire on Mother’s Day to call for unity in fighting crime. Local officials promised a strong response to the attackers who injured 19 people.
The president of the social club whose parade was attacked says the group has no plans of abandoning its traditional celebration.
Ed Buckner says other social aid and pleasure groups are also going ahead with their parades as planned.
“We are going to take our community back. We’re going to take this corner back. This corner belongs to the community, not to the hoods.”
New Orleans police continue looking for three suspects seen running away after shots were fired.
One man identified by witnesses is seen on video surveillance firing what appears to be a handgun into the crowd.
Buckner says his club plans to have a do-over parade early next month.
