Louisiana health advocates reported a surge in interest in signing up for the Affordable Care Act before the deadline.

Increased last-hour interest and problems with the healthcare.gov website slowed the process of signing up for insurance under the Affordable Care Act in Louisiana.

Website problems led staffers at the Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Corporation to start using the telephone to sign up applicants. That organization serves the Vietnamese community in New Orleans East.

That was also time-consuming, with calls lasting up to two hours.

An insurance agent in Monroe says calls from people interested in signing up in the final days kept her working all day Saturday.

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover said navigators there were booked with appointments through the final hours.
