A federal judge is ordering former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin to pay the government more than a half-million dollars, stemming from his corruption conviction. The order comes ahead of his sentencing set for next month.

Former Mayor Nagin was convicted in February of 20 counts of bribery, fraud, money laundering and conspiracy. Prosecutors say Nagin solicited bribes from contractors doing business with the city. The amounts went up dramatically after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 brought massive reconstruction projects.

Nagin’s had financial problems since leaving office in 2010. His wife filed for bankruptcy and his home outside Dallas is in foreclosure.

The embattled former mayor is facing three to 20 years in prison when he’s sentenced, now scheduled for June 11, his 58th birthday.
