Loyola University

The Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series at Loyola University New Orleans will feature two performances, a vocal competition and a woodwind workshop as part of a series of free music events in September.

The College of Music and Fine Arts will host the Schmidt Youth Vocal Competition on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. in Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Calhoun Street. Sponsored by the William E. Schmidt Foundation, the competition encourages and nurtures young people in the arts and is open to talented vocal artists who are currently high school sophomores, juniors or seniors and who are recommended by their vocal teachers or choral directors.

Also on Sept. 15, at 10 a.m., the Loyola Faculty Woodwind Quintet will present a free workshop to prepare woodwind students for the upcoming Louisiana All-State Band and Orchestra Audition. Topics will include practicing, breathing techniques, the importance of rhythm, musical phrasing and psychological preparation for auditions. Individual coaching sessions for each instrument will also be offered. The workshop will take place in Room 240 of the Communications/Music Complex.

In their inaugural concert, the Ignatius Faculty Sax Quartet will present a salute to the legendary Hollywood Sax Quartet on Monday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Hall. The free concert will feature original HSQ arrangements, plus music by Alfred Desenclos, Kurt Weill, Ástor Piazzolla and Nazareth.

Finally, on Saturday, Sept. 29, Loyola’s major music ensembles will be featured in the Prism concert at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Hall.

Free parking is available in Loyola's West Road Garage, located on West Road and accessible from St. Charles Avenue.
