Polls show Governor John Bel Edwards will be reelected to a second term.

Louisiana's Democratic governor John Bel Edwards has been re-elected to serve a second term. According to the Associated Press, the unofficial results show Edwards will win the election over his Republican challenger, businessman and political donor Eddie Rispone.

Two hours after polls closed Saturday, Edwards led Rispone by more than 20,000 votes, with 97 percent of precincts reporting. Many of the remaining precincts are in Democratic-leaning urban areas.

The win makes Edwards the only Democratic governor in the deep South.
