Memorial Service Held For Arts Activist Sharon Litwin

About 200 people gathered at The Pavilion of the Two Sisters in City Park on Sunday for a memorial to cultural activist Sharon Litwin.

Leaders of the groups she helped over the years turned out to honor the British native who embraced New Orleans.

Members of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra performed between speakers.

Her daughter, Anna-Marie Litwin Jene spoke of the strong connection Litwin had with New Orleans.

Others remarked on Litwin’s careers as a journalist, food critic, dinner host, fundraiser and supporter for a wide variety of arts organizations.

Jene later explained how her mother bonded with the city she called home for 50 years.

“She always had this slightly Bohemian spirit underneath that Britishness, you know, and this really fit her to a tee," she said.

And she says her mother planted seeds with people that she hopes will flourish.

“For her, it was about perpetuating the possibilities. She saw the possibilities and she was able to connect those people and those experiences together so that they can go on and perpetuate themselves," she said.

Litwin passed away in June after a battle with cancer. She was 75.

And she’s now been given a traditional New Orleans send-off.
