A View From The Top: Huey P. Long Bridge

This Sunday is a big day in the history of a Louisiana landmark. The Huey P. Long Bridge is scheduled to re-open, with three wider lanes of car traffic on each side, and two rail lines running down the middle.

The project cost $1.2 billion, and it’s been underway since 2006. Engineer Tonja Koob Marking became so fascinated with the bridge she wrote a book about it. WWNO’s Eve Troeh spoke with her about the importance of the structure. They started with details of the author and engineer’s recent climb to the peak of the newly expanded bridge.

On Sunday, June 16, the bridge will be open to the public at 8 a.m. for a unique 5K run/walk across it. Festivities will follow later, including historical artifacts, guest speakers and photo opportunities. Check out hueyprun.com for more information.
