Super Bowl Memories: SB XXIV

Long before the San Francisco 49ers descended on the Crescent City for this year’s Super Bowl XLVII, the franchise cemented its 1980s dynasty in dominating fashion, defeating the Denver Broncos 55-10 at the Louisiana Superdome on Jan. 28, 1990.

The 45-point margin of victory remains the most lopsided in Super Bowl history.

San Francisco’s victory in Super Bowl XXIV was the fourth world championship for Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana and his 49ers, but only the first for rookie head coach George Seifert.

Montana earned his third Super Bowl MVP award on the strength of 297 passing yards and a Super Bowl-record five touchdown passes, including three to Jerry Rice, the NFL’s all-time leading receiver.

Denver’s Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway suffered through perhaps his darkest day as a professional, completing only ten of his 26 pass attempts for 108 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions and four sacks.

The 49ers won a fifth Super Bowl five years later, bringing their record in the Big Game to an unblemished 5-0. Now, they return to New Orleans to play for their first title in 18 seasons.
