WWNO Coastal Reporter
Position Summary: WWNO 89.9 FM – New Orleans Public Radio is seeking a Coastal Reporter to cover coastal environmental issues of impact in our region. The Coastal reporter will be part of WWNO’s coastal desk and work with the Senior Coastal Reporter.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities: Reporter will focus on Coastal issues and tackle the science, economics, politics and cultural issues of coastal dynamics in Southeast Louisiana. This includes reporting developments for daily news, as well as larger trends, history, projections and context for feature stories and series. Will be available for interviews on the air. Reporter will also keep a mind toward digital presentation on WWNO.org, in addition to filing for newscast and features. Other focus areas as directed by News Director.
General news reporting. Reporter stays up-to-date on city-wide stories, as well as national stories that may be localized. Research, cultivate sources, pitch, produce and upload stories for daily newscasts, as well as longer features.
Working with News Director and other staff to plan long-term coverage for WWNO.
Fill-in hosting for programs and other reporters. Public appearances to represent WWNO, and topical panel discussions. On-air fundraising.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors Degree, or 8 years of professional experience may be substituted for a degree
- At least 1 year of reporting or anchoring experience required
- Demonstrated ability to research, write, and report news stories for broadcast, both daily spot news and longer features
- Experience with recording equipment and digital audio editing software
- Experience with posting news stories to a website and social media
- Knowledge of general assignment reporting; and an ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekend hours
Desirable Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree; three or more years of reporting experience, ideally in radio, web-savvy and social media savvy candidate; and experience anchoring a newscast and running a control board.
Salary: Salary commensurate with experience.
