Loyola Student Sexually Assaulted in Campus Parking Garage

A Loyola university student was sexually assaulted in a campus parking garage by an acquaintance this past Friday, the university announced that evening in an e-mail sent by the campus police department.

The woman was assaulted at approximately 4:12 a.m. on Jan. 15 in the stairwell of the Freret St. garage, according to the university's statement. Loyola says the victim has identified her attacker, and the New Orleans Police Department is handling the investigation.

Loyola has released a series of safety tips to the campus community:

Safety Tips:

-Stop, Ask, Clarify

-Trust your instincts and feelings.

-You always have the right to change your mind.

-Know your limits and observe them, alcohol and drugs impair everyone’s perception and judgment.

-Consent means having the ability to make a decision.   An intoxicated person cannot give consent.

-Use a buddy system when you go to parties-go and leave with the same group.

-Everyone’s right to say ‘no’ should be honored, regardless of the activity which preceded it.

The university is reminding staff, students and faculty to contact the police immediately if a witness to or victim of a crime. Loyola's campus police can be reached at (504) 865-3434 (ext. 3434 on campus), and the NOPD can be reached in an emergency by dialing 911.
