The corruption trial of former Mayor Ray Nagin is set to resume today in federal court. A one-day break was called when one juror had a medical issue.
Federal court records do not disclose the nature of the medical matter, but they say the unidentified jurist will be available today. It’s another bump in the trial that’s had fits and starts during the proceedings.
Jury selection was delayed for two days by an ice storm and cold weather. Heavy rain prompted US District Judge Ginger Berrigan to set an early recess. Panelists are traveling to New Orleans from several outlying parishes. But the skies cleared and the trial continued.
Nagin is facing a 21-count indictment. The government says he accepted bribes while in office. He served from 2002 to 2010, and says witnesses are lying to get better deals on prior guilty pleas. Deliberations resume at 9 a.m.
