Anti-Violence Protest March Held Along St. Claude Avenue

Protesters march along St. Claude Avenue

About 100 people marched along St. Claude Avenue in New Orleans on Sunday in protest of police shootings and street violence.

Marchers chanted their message of Black Lives Matter, and called for peace.

Community organizer Action Jackson says the issue did not begin last week with the killing of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge

“It’s not on him. It goes way back – Rodney King, Trevon Martin, everybody. I mean, first of all you just can’t kill nobody for no reason," Jackson said. "If you want to arrest somebody, arrest them. Then you gotta take your consequences. But when you’re killing people for no reason, then we got a bigger problem.”

Travis Lyons says his son was murdered  -- and violence must stop.

“We’re taking a stand. This is what this is all about. You know, bring the message to the forefront.  Let them know, you know, we’re tired of it," Lyons said. "We ain’t standing for it, you know, and it is what it is. And we got to fight, you know what I’m saying? This is what this is all about. Keeping it going.”

There was a minimal police presence at the march, which began a few minutes before another organized by New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu was held outside the Superdome.
