Coronavirus In Louisiana Today: At Least 1,802 Dead, 27,660 Sickened

Dry Dock Cafe is closed until further notice, New Orleans, Louisiana. April 7, 2020.

It's been 52 days since the first positive test for the coronavirus was reported in Louisiana. Here's where things stand, according to the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH).

There have been 27,660 positive tests for the coronavirus.

Of those, 6,420 were in Orleans Parish, 6,173 were in Jefferson Parish and 1,830 were in East Baton Rouge Parish. Those are the three hardest-hit parishes.

State labs have completed 7,683 tests. Commercial labs have performed 148,885 tests. That's a total of 156,568 tests. As of today, 17.67 percent of tests have returned positive. That rate has hovered between 16 and 22 percent for most of April.

The growth rate of COVID-19 cases in Louisiana has stayed under 2 percent for nine days straight. It dipped under 1 percent twice in the last four days. Overall, the growth rate appears to be levelling off (though there are caveats).

There have been 1,802 people reported dead of COVID-19.

The LDH website says there are also 43 deaths that are probably a result of a coronavirus infection.

In Orleans Parish, 416 people have died. In Jefferson Parish, 340 people have died, and in East Baton Rouge Parish, 129 people have died.

Of everyone who has died in Lousiana, 58.68 percent of them were black and 38.24 percent were white. Groups identified as Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander or "other" made up less than 1 percent each. The race of about 1.5 percent of those who died is unknown.

About 76 percent were identified as non-Hispanic/Latino and 1.65 percent were identified as Hispanic/Latino. The ethinicity of 22.33 percent of people is unknown.

As for a gender breakdown: 43 percent were female and 57 percent were male.

Hypertension remains far and away the most prevalent comorbidity, found in 55.28 percent of those who've died. The second most prevalent is diabetes: 34.35 percent.

There are 1,629 people in hospitals with COVID-19 and 244 are on ventilators.

Both numbers — but particularly the number of people on ventilators — have been dropping pretty consistently for weeks.

As of April 26, 17,303 people are presumed to have recovered from COVID-19.

That number is not updated daily. This is only the second time it's been reported. On April 24, it was 14,927.

There's a lot to keep up with right now.
