Prison reform groups are calling for the creation of an independent health monitor to combat the spread of the coronavirus among incarcerated people and prison staff.
They say efforts by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections to tackle the pandemic have fallen far short and demanded the new position at a hearing this week at the legislature.
