Mayor Landrieu Predicts Voters Will Reject Crescent City Bridge Tolls

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu has campaigned in favor of keeping the $1 tolls on the Crescent City Connection.

But he says now that he probably won’t win that fight, considering Jazz Fest and other events may prove more inviting than the polls.

“Given the day that the election’s called on, and given the current thing, I think people have been fairly clear about wanting to not have them. My only comment about that entire time is somebody has got to pay for the operation and the upkeep. And I’m hoping that our legislators who have pushed getting rid of the tolls are going to honor their commitment to make sure that the state honors its responsibility to pay for the lights on that bridge the police protection on that bridge and really for the upkeep. I think it’s going to be quite difficult.”

Opponents say the toll is an unfair tax, and is a financial drag on the West Bank.

The measure was narrowly approved in November, but a judge ruled there was a problem with provisional ballots and put it back up for a vote.
