New Orleans Now Has A COVID-19 Vaccine Waitlist

The New Orleans Health Department now has a COVID-19 vaccine waitlist for all who are eligible to receive vaccinations.

Launched Thursday, the waitlist allows residents who are eligible for vaccines to either call 311 or to visitready.nola.gov/getvaccine to sign-up.

When vaccine appointments from the health department and from vaccine providers become available each week, people on the waitlist will be contacted to schedule an appointment.

“COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact, highlighting longstanding inequities in the health of many groups in our community,” Health Director Dr. Jennifer Avegno said in a press release. “Providing the COVID-19 vaccine to seniors of color, low-income seniors, and those with functional and access needs continues to be a top priority for Mayor Cantrell and the New Orleans Health Department.”

According to the Louisiana Department of Health, 16.7 percent of the people in the state who have received at least one of the two required injections needed to be vaccinated are Black.

The city’s press release said that at the end of Thursday, New Orleans will have provided roughly 850 vaccines to residents in the Phase 1A and Phase 1B, Tier 1 priority groups.

Here is who is currently eligible to receive a vaccine:

  • people age 65 or older
  • outpatients
  • community care workers
  • dental and behavioral health clinic providers and staff
  • dialysis providers and staff
  • home health care providers and staff and their recipients
  • faculty, staff, students and residents of allied health schools
  • first responders to serve on vaccinations
  • American Sign Language Interpreters and Support Service Providers and their clients who are both deaf and blind
  • first responders, including law enforcement
  • state and local COVID-19 emergency response personnel
  • some election staff in preparation for March elections

The health department has recruited more than 600 volunteers to assist in vaccine efforts, including staffing call centers for vaccine appointments.
