New Orleans public schools will report COVID-19 cases among students and staff at the school level and share the information with the public on a weekly basis, the district announced Thursday.

Since last Thursday, there has been one confirmed case of COVID-19: a staff member at Landry-Walker High School in Algiers.

Following guidelines for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals who have close contact with the staff member have been instructed to quarantine at home for at least 14 days, according to the district.

Landry-Walker currently does not have any students in the building since high school students are still learning entirely online.

Schools are required to report positive test results to the district as well as to the Louisiana Department of Health.

While teachers have been working from school buildings for several months, students returned to the classroom for the first time late last week. The district welcomed back PreK through 4th-graders and plans to phase in more students next month if the city’s case count remains under control.

Updates will be issued to members of the media every Thursday at 4 pm.
